The tranquil ruins of Wenlock Priory stand in a picturesque setting on the fringe of beautiful Much Wenlock. An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in about 680 by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter Milburge was hailed as a saint. Her relics were miraculously re-discovered here in 1101, attracting both pilgrims and prosperity to the priory.ion.
Attingham Park
This 18th-century National Trust property contains one of the most complete surviving collections of Regency style.
Wenlock Edge is a narrow limestone escarpment that runs for 18 miles from Craven Arms to Ironbridge, the National Trust owns 8 miles of this stretch. There is a mix of flower-rich limestone grasslands and ancient woodland along with internationally important sites for geology, making the area an important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Along Wenlock Edge you'll see evidence of its old industrial use, with old quarrys and lime kilns along the way.
Situated on a plateau above the gorge of the River Severn, this fine stone house has mullioned and transomed windows, a stunning interior with carved oak staircase and decorated plaster ceilings and oak paneling.
The current house was built in 1535 but there have been Benthalls living on this site since the medieval period. During this time the house has been part of many interesting events from the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution.
In the garden there are fabulous crocus displays to be seen in the spring and autumn, there's also an intimate and carefully restored plantsman's garden, an old kitchen garden and interesting Restoration church.
A World Heritage Site and the beating heart of the Industrial Revolution, the Ironbridge Gorge is home to some amazing museums that make for an unforgettable experience.
Much Wenlock has been a market town for over 800 years offering shoppers a great choice of produce from a variety of producers and sellers. These range from fresh fruit and vegetables to locally produced pies, preserves, honey and meats. Alongside local producers are traders selling all sorts of general and household products, books, vintage clothing, arts, crafts and plants. The Buttermarket, Square and Corn Exchange are available to hire for markets, live music, demonstrations, exhibitions, festivals, charity events and more!
